Book Drive for Children of Incarcerated Parents

Throughout the month of May, our volunteers have been diligently soliciting donations of new and gently used children’s books for our program. All books collected will later be brought to the prisons in which we film. Once there, parents preparing for filming are able to select books they feel are most suitable for their children. When video recording begins, the parents read the books they’ve chosen as part of their personal messages. The books are sent home with the DVDs, allowing the incarcerated parents to read to their children from afar.

While we accept book donations throughout the year, spring is the time of our greatest need. The majority of our filming takes place just before Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, with Christmas being the second-most busiest time. Because we see great importance in keeping kids connected to their parents, especially through significant holidays, there is a stronger push for donations during these times.

This year, we tried to expand our reach by creating and promoting a Facebook event with details on how anyone can donate. The great news? It worked! The power of social media has brought us a significant response to our call this year. We’ve received boxes of books from all over the country, and we haven’t lost momentum.

The staff members of Studio East Salon in Norfolk, Virginia, were so inspired that they began a book drive of their own. Customers have been encouraged to drop off books or monetary donations on their next visit to the salon. As if that isn’t already cool enough, this drive actually brought in a box of books for Spanish-speaking families! This is an area of growing need, so it is immensely appreciated.

Brian Inks, a member of The Messages Project Board of Directors, personally collected more than 120 books in Virginia this spring. He also forwarded 2 gift cards that were donated to be used to purchase more. We send our most sincere thanks to Sgt. Robert VanAusdall, U.S. Army, for his contributions to Brian and our program.  Another member of our Board of Directors, Katie Brownlow, was able to collect many children’s books from her co-workers in New Jersey. It is indeed inspiring to see how far the word of our need has spread and how many charitable folks there are who so graciously give to the children in utmost need.

We also created an Amazon Wish List to assist our supporters in donating with ease. Don’t have extra books at home to send us? Looking to avoid personal shipping costs? Send us a gift from Amazon! We’ve carefully selected popular children’s titles, including many focused on parent-child relationships and dealing with separation. Next time you’re placing an Amazon order for yourself, please consider adding a book or two from our Wish List to your cart. It will ship directly to us without any further effort on your part. It’s that easy!

Please use this opportunity to tidy up your bookshelves at home, sending any like-new children’s books our way. As we near the end of the school year, it wouldn’t hurt to mention this to school teachers you know. Many are cleaning out their classroom shelves around this time, and we will gladly take their extra books to use in filming. From one loving home to the next, these books mean so much more than you’ll ever know.

Contest: Write a Memorable Tagline

As The Messages Project continues to grow, expanding to more states across the country and providing countless children with much-needed contact with their incarcerated parents, it has become obvious that our inner structure also needs a bit of an update. We have recently added a few new leaders to our Board of Directors, and we’re drafting a brand new mission statement, which will be revealed on our new Web site in the near future. These are changes that were influenced by our non-profit training with Annenberg Alchemy in December 2012. Our next item on the agenda is to select a tagline to represent the work our program does. That’s where you come in. We need your help! Your insight and support is what keeps our organization going, so it is only fitting that we ask you to assist in this task.

What We Need

We’re looking for a catchy, creative tagline that captures the essence of The Messages Project. This slogan will be used in conjunction with our logo, to ensure familiarity of our brand to the public.

Suggestions for a Quality Tagline

  • Be concise, using eight words or less
  • Include verbs (action words)
  • Emphasize our mission and those we help
  • Tie ideas into the image of our logo (i.e., the heart)
  • Inspire others to support our program using emotion

A Few Examples Used by Other Brands

  • “Get a piece of the rock.” (Prudential)
  • “Have it your way.” (Burger King)
  • “Expect more. Pay Less.” (Target)
  • “Stronger than dirt.” (Ajax)
  • “My life. My card.” (American Express)
  • “Competition. Bad for them. Great for you.” (DHL)

What You’ll Get

After the contest period ends (June 1, 2013), we will select our favorite submission. The writer of the best tagline will receive a $25 Amazon.com gift card, as well as a personal acknowledgement on our Web site, Facebook, and Twitter. And of course, you’ll have the honor of knowing that your words will touch the lives of many families through the advancement of our organization.

The Fine Print:

The Messages Project will retain ownership of and reserves the right to use submitted taglines in any and all future branding of the organization. This includes (but is not limited to) print media, electronic messaging, and marketing material.

Deep Run Marathon Dance Raises $1 Million for Charity

The Deep Run Marathon Dance (DRMD) began on Friday, March 15. Approximately 900 students from the Virginia high school participated in a 27-hour dance party that included costume competitions, air bands, game challenges, and just a tiny break for sleep (only about 3 hours…for those who were able to calm down long enough for a quick nap).

Since October, these dedicated volunteers have been raising money for 12 local charities like ours through a variety of sources. Restaurants in the area hosted fundraisers, a blood drive kicked in an extra $10 for each pint of blood given, a Zumba class brought in donors, kids asked family and neighbors to pitch in, and some students even took the initiative to sell items online to meet their personal goals. Their goal was set quite high; the students of Deep Run hoped to finally break the $1 million mark. The dance, now in its seventh year, has helped almost 70 non-profit organizations, and their all-time goal was in sight.

After dancing through exhaustion, the students’ dream was finally realized on Saturday night. The final donation statistics were unveiled, and the students and staff of Deep Run celebrated surpassing their $1 million goal. The total raised for the 2013 dance, $243,855, brought the overall tally to $1,106,992. They had beat their goal by almost $107,000! Amazingly, the top student alone raised over $7,000 this year. To say this group is dedicated is an understatement.

When given the opportunity to provide a “shout-out” to the students at DRMD on Saturday night, Messages Project Founder Carolyn LeCroy made sure she conveyed just how much of a difference they’ve made. She said:

“Thank you for having me here in Wildcat country! And thank you so much for choosing us, The Messages Project. You have no idea how many children’s lives you’re going to touch. If every one of you touches just one life, and they touch another, and they touch another…what a great world this is going to be. It’s starting here with you all today. We can’t tell you enough how much we appreciate it. Go Wildcats!”

With the money we receive from this spectacular event, we will be able to invest in improved video equipment for filming our messages. This generous donation will also be a huge help in restocking our supply of DVDs, and it will support our ongoing postage expenses. The support we’ve gotten from DRMD is going to make so many children happy. Our program just wouldn’t be possible without donations like these, and the selfless act of raising money for families in need is truly inspiring.

We thank the community of Deep Run and we thank you for making this happen. To all who supported DRMD — through monetary donations, Facebook posts, Tweets, onsite fundraising, and more — we cannot fully express the gratitude we feel. You are all a blessing to us. Thank you!

Deep Run Marathon Dance Committee: Why We Chose The Messages Project

This year, there were 72 candidates who applied to become one of the 12 organizations that would benefit from the Deep Run Marathon Dance. Since October, the Deep Run Marathon Dance student committee, which consists of 50 Deep Run High School students of all grades, has been working diligently to decide which of the 72 applicants would be chosen. This is a very tedious and extensive process, and there is a lot that goes into deciding who will receive grant money at the end of our program.

The Messages Project was in the front running from the beginning. It received a very high “first glance” rating from the committee, and as the list of possible recipients decreased, The Messages Project began to stand out even more.

The committee was drawn to The Messages Project primarily because a few committee members have a personal connection to children affected by parental incarceration. Personal connections are a main deciding factor in the selection process. Another deciding factor is whether or not each organization directly affects the Deep Run community. Although The Messages Project is widely used throughout all of Virginia, there is no doubt they have affected the lives of those within the Deep Run area.

Ultimately, the committee chose The Messages Project because it is unique. The Deep Run Marathon Dance has never benefited an organization that targets children with incarcerated parents, so this provides another window for the dance to reach even further into the community and touch the hearts of those children and families benefiting from The Messages Project.

2013 Deep Run Marathon Dance

We’re happy to announce that The Messages Project has been accepted as a recipient of a grant from the 2013 Deep Run High School Marathon Dance (DRMD)! Students in Virginia will dance for 27 hours on March 15-16 to raise funds for local non-profits such as ours. Last year, the dance raised $250,000 for 12 charities. Their goal this year is $1 million! The grant we receive will allow us to buy new cameras for our program and pay for postage and DVD costs.

Messages Project Founder Carolyn LeCroy had the opportunity to meet with several of the teens involved with the upcoming Deep Run Marathon Dance in Virginia. These wonderful students are part of the reason our program was chosen (out of about 70) to receive grants from their fundraisers this year.

If you live in the Glen Allen, VA, area, you can help the students (and us!) by attending their upcoming fundraisers:

  • February 18 at Cheeburger Cheeburger
  • February 25 at Chipotle
  • March 1 at Sonic Drive-In
  • March 13 at Buffalo Wild Wings

Click here for a complete list of upcoming events and address information.

If you don’t live in the area and would like to support, you still can! The DRMD offers an Online Donation Form for anyone who would like to contribute to the cause. Please donate if you can. Let’s help the dance reach its $1 million goal!
